Maintaining a Happy Marriage | How to Resolve Relationship Problems

Know how to maintain a happy marriage with your
spouse with the following tips.

When falling in love, we tend to get that butterfly feeling in our stomach. It’s as if being in love is such a sweet haven, and there’s no doubt that it is. Everything seems surreal. However, what follows this blissful feeling is a reality that portrays how a married life is far from a “happily ever after” story, and sometimes not even close to it.

As you get to learn the importance of marriage, you will realize that the whole “until death do us part” is easier said than done. How you perceive the definition of love suddenly seems different. In other words, a happy marriage isn’t always possible. Obstacles will always be present and extra effort will be needed, especially when both parties are no longer willing to work things out.

Today, there has been a drastic fall in successful marriages. It turns out that having a blessed married life doesn’t readily translate to a happy life. As much as it takes two to tango, relationships require both partners’ efforts to work out. But what could couples tend to overlook in their relationship? Why do marriages fail when it’s supposed to last a lifetime? How do you maintain a happy marriage? To answer these questions, here are a few things you may want to ponder in the course of your relationship with someone:

  • Being too familiar with each other’s company
Most relationships will reach a point where being familiar with each other’s company means throwing away any shy or awkward feeling out the window. Overtime, the comfort of each other’s presence blinds the couple from seeing what they initially love about each other. With that usually comes less attention towards the other person. Inconsistency then steps in and what happens next is the lack of affection which will then lead to a so-so kind of marriage - one that is not bad but dull.

Too much of anything is never good, hence, if you’ve become too comfortable with each other’s company, learn to give each other time and space. This way, both of you will have room to grow as individual people while simultaneously growing to be better in your relationship. This will also help you appreciate more of what you have as a couple and will allow you to notice the little things which you appreciate about each other.

  • Communicating to respond, not to understand
Communication is a vital requirement in every relationship. This is what helps you build your trust for one another. But the thing about communicating is that we often do it the wrong way. We tend to listen to know how to respond rather than listen to understand.

When we talk, we often just say what we have in mind. With that arises conflict and misunderstanding - all because of miscommunication. To settle this, be more empathetic. Start to consciously focus on truly listening and stop finding counter-arguments just to determine who’s right or wrong. Don’t just jump in and tell your story, but also understand the situation. There is no conflict that cannot be resolved as long as you communicate effectively.

  • Failure to set boundaries
Everyone has their own limitations. Likewise, relationships should also have boundaries. No matter how much of a loving wife or a loving husband a person can be, people can only go through a certain level of tolerance. Failure to set boundaries could lead your relationship downhill.

Setting boundaries in your relationship will help you determine what you’re both comfortable with. It will help you understand each other better and you’ll get to create a healthier and harmonious relationship.

If you’re yearning for a happy marriage, then you have to be ready to take care of your relationship in the long run. Be aware of each other’s goals that will help your marriage last. Learn to compromise and rely on one another when needed. Because in truth, no marriage can ever work out if both parties involved aren’t willing to work together as a team.
